Changes to the MBTA

MBTA/Commuter Rail Communication

Good afternoon,

I hope this note finds you well and enjoying the weather here in Boston! I write to you today with a request for help and advocacy in regard to the proposed changes to public transportation in our area. At BC High, the “commute” is one of our differentiators with nearly three-quarters of our students (1100+) utilizing the JFK/UMass-Boston Station every day. Our students learn to navigate the trains in a way that teaches them real-world lessons. They develop a sense of independence and are afforded many more opportunities in the City of Boston and beyond because of it. Simply put, changes to the MBTA and Commuter Rail would have a direct impact on our students and families each day.

It comes as no surprise that our public transit system is facing significant challenges in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. With that in mind, there are proposed changes in service and potential cuts to some of BC High’s most traveled lines. The MBTA Fiscal Management Board met today (11/9) and will be hosting regional meetings in the coming weeks to hear from the public on the impact of transit in the given regions. We expect a decision in early December. We are asking for your help in attending these virtual meetings which are open to the public and sharing your story.

Virtual Public Meetings

Meetings will address service in a specific region. The nine regions pictured above are: 1) Metrowest, 2) Minuteman, 3) Boston and Milton, 4) Inner Core, 5) Mystic River, 6) South Shore, 7) North Shore, 8) Bristol, and 9) Merrimack Valley.
We’ll be holding 11 public meetings over Zoom (nine regional meetings, two system-wide meetings). You can join by computer, smartphone app, or telephone.
