Boston, Mass. (June 3, 2022): On Thursday afternoon at a special groundbreaking ceremony attended by Boston College High School coaches, faculty and staff, alumni, parents and Board members, the school broke ground on the Murphy Family Stadium. The new stadium and athletic facilities were made possible by a $2.5 million gift from alumnus John V. Murphy ’67, P’98. Members of the Murphy family including John, his brother, Rick, ’69, and son, Chris, ’98 were all present for this special ceremony.
Thanks to the Murphy gift, the new state-of-the-art stadium will feature new grandstand seating for nearly 2,000 fans, including ADA-compliant ramps and stairs; a new press box with an upgraded sound system; two permanent buildings to house concessions, ticketing, and restroom facilities; and a plaza complete with a courtyard for students and fans to enjoy.
“Three generations of Murphy’s have been touched by their student-athlete experience at BC High,” said John V. Murphy ’67, P’98. “It is my hope that Murphy Family Stadium will provide students – present and future – with the same comradery that myself, my father, brothers and son experienced and benefitted from. This school is a special place, and I am so proud to be a part of its legacy.”
“This winter, when we made the announcement of this special gift to our senior athletes and coaches, John and I reminded the young men that wearing an Eagles uniform means more than just scores and stats,” said President Grace Cotter Regan. “The stadium and facilities allow us to align the physical spaces on our campus with our philosophical approach to Jesuit education – cura personalis – caring for each students’ head, heart and hands. John’s generosity to support our mission has been unprecedented and we are so grateful for his commitment to our school and Jesuit education.”
Building a new stadium and athletic facilities is a primary component of Phase One of the comprehensive Campus Master Plan, announced earlier this year as part of BC High’s Vision 2026 Strategic Plan, which prioritizes student health and wellness. This is underscored by the April 2022 announcement of a $49 million gift from late alumnus Pat Cadigan ’52 to build a 50,000 square foot wellness complex.
Rockland-based R.A.D. Sports will oversee the construction of Murphy Family Stadium, and the project is set to be completed by Fall 2022. Additional details about the construction of the new stadium, including initial stadium renderings, are available on the Campus Master Plan section of the BC High web site.
