BC High Head Football Coach Jonathan Brillo Steps Down to Spend More Time with Family
Boston, MA (May 7, 2021): Coach Jonathan Brillo ’99 announced he will step down as BC High’s head football coach to spend more time with his family and on his full-time job. The BC High alumnus returned to his alma mater in 2008, spending the next ten years as an assistant before being named head coach in 2018.
Athletic Director Jon Bartlett ’87 said, “Coach Brillo invested so much time and energy into his coaching duties. He was always the consummate gentlemen to his players and assistant coaches. I know I speak for all his coaches and his former players in thanking him for his commitment to BC High Football.”
President Grace Cotter Regan P’12 is no stranger to the hard work required to coach high school football. Her father, Jim Cotter ’55, was a legendary coach for decades at BC High, and is the namesake of the football field. “As a coach’s daughter, I know firsthand just how much heart and soul Jonathan has put into the program these past few years. Especially after this difficult and unprecedented season, we respect and honor his decision. As his BC High Football family, we are grateful for all that he has done, and hope that he enjoys more time with his family at home.”
Brillo’s time at the helm produced some impressive players who have gone on to play at the Division I, II, and III levels – a testament to the care and preparation of his staff. After his tenure, the program is poised to continue in an exciting direction. “We view athletics here at BC High as an extension of the classroom,” said Principal Adam Lewis. “With football being one of our largest sports – that’s clearly no exception. Our teams are places of real depth where young men not only compete and have fun but learn and grow too. Athletics should be a formative experience where these boys are building meaningful relationships, learning about themselves, and learning about the world through skills like teamwork and commitment. I am deeply grateful to Coach Brillo for making our students better men.”
Summing up his experience, Brillo said “This was not an easy decision, especially after 13 fantastic seasons at my alma mater – a place I consider my second home. I would first like to thank all the student-athletes I have had the privilege to coach. You are the reason I loved coaching so much and made coming to practice every day a pleasure. Next, I would like to thank President Grace Regan, Principal Adam Lewis, and Athletic Director Jon Bartlett for their support and trust in me during my time. Finally, I want to give a huge thank you to my family, who along with great support, also made great sacrifices so I could chase my dream of coaching. I am forever grateful to them and feel it is the right time to step away and give them my full, undivided attention. I wish the team nothing but success and look forward to cheering them on in the fall. Go Eagles!”
The search for BC High’s next head football coach will be announced at a later date.
