BC HIGH CELEBRATES ATHLETIC EXCELLENCE WITH 2024 HALL OF FAME INDUCTION CEREMONY
BOSTON, MA – On November 24, 2024, over 200 members of the Boston College High School community gathered to celebrate the induction of exceptional athletes, coaches, and contributors into the BC High Athletic Hall of Fame. The event honored individuals and teams whose dedication, sportsmanship, and accomplishments have made a lasting impact on BC High athletics. The evening recognized a diverse group of inductees for their contributions to the school’s athletic legacy:
Patrick Downes ’01 – James E. Cotter ’55 Courage Award
Patrick Downes is a shining example of resilience and compassion, overcoming adversity as a survivor of the Boston Marathon bombing. Now a psychologist at Home Base, Patrick supports veterans and active-duty service members. He and his wife, Jessica Kensky, have also founded the BC Strong Scholarship, ensuring BC High remains a welcoming place for students with disabilities.
Fr. Robert Kickham ’74 – Paul J. Hunter ’53 Man for Others Award
Fr. Bob Kickham has exemplified a life of service, from his early career in finance to his ordination as a priest in 1997. His leadership in the Archdiocese of Boston, including serving as Secretary to the Cardinal Archbishop, showcases his unwavering dedication to faith, community, and pastoral care.
Danny Collins ’13 – Athletic Hall of Fame Inductee
Danny Collins’ exceptional talent in rugby and football earned him All-American honors and led to a professional rugby career with the New England Freejacks. As a coach, he has inspired multiple BC High rugby teams to state titles.
Derek Malone ’86 – Athletic Hall of Fame Inductee
Derek Malone was a standout basketball player, track athlete, and later a basketball coach at Stonehill College, where he helped guide the team to a Division II Final Four. His perseverance and leadership both on and off the court are hallmarks of his legacy.
Mark Mullen ’99 – Athletic Hall of Fame Inductee
Mark Mullen’s remarkable hockey career, highlighted by back-to-back Beanpot Championships at Boston University and his leadership as team captain, is a testament to his dedication. Today, Mark shapes the future of hockey as an NHL scout.
Austin Schuette ’93 – Athletic Hall of Fame Inductee
Austin Schuette was a trailblazer for BC High wrestling, competing in its first-ever varsity match and earning accolades throughout his high school career. His contributions set the foundation for the wrestling program’s success and united the community across sports and activities.
Jack Shields ’06 – Athletic Hall of Fame Inductee
Jack Shields was a four-year varsity starter in football, later becoming a leader at the University of Virginia. His commitment to teamwork and sportsmanship has left a lasting legacy on and off the field.
The evening celebrated not only the athletic achievements of these remarkable individuals and teams but also their embodiment of BC High’s values of leadership, community, and excellence.
Ed Toland ’83 – Athletic Hall of Fame Inductee
A standout baseball player, Ed Toland’s high school achievements included an extraordinary 21-3 record as a pitcher and leadership as team captain. After success at Harvard University, Ed returned to BC High as a coach, contributing to the school’s first D1 Massachusetts State Championship in 2024.
2009 Indoor Track Team – Athletic Hall of Fame Inductee
The 2009 indoor track team made history with a championship season led by standout performances from athletes like Corey Thomas ’09, a High School All-American, and Michael Murphy ’09. The team’s grit and teamwork left an indelible mark on BC High athletics.
